Freelancer Ts and Cs – Jo Watson

freelancer, copywriter, content, freelance, editor, trainer, agoodwriteup, Bolton, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Jo Watson, contract, business, writing, copywriting, editing, training, CPD, terms and conditions

As a freelancer, it’s not you. It’s the blaggers, chancers and bastards that came looooong before you. Every T&C below is a fair and considered response to a boundary once pushed and to the piss once taken. It was my own freelancer fault, really. I didn’t carefully select who I worked with. And I was a bit too nice for my own good. The lovely, hard-working, professional folk I work with nowadays massively respect (and champion) the Ts & Cs that I’ve used for the past few years, so if you and me have already got this far, you’re going to be more than happy with them, too – I’m certain. Ready? Before we start…

  1. As a freelancer, I’m not working for you. I’m working with you. This is a partnership – and we’re both going to do brilliantly out of it.
  2. All briefs must be made in writing, documenting any info you feel I may need – and any resources you’d like me to draw upon – prior to me starting any work.
  3. If I don’t think I can help you, do your project justice, or give you exceptional value for your trust, time and money, I’ll turn you away (with love, of course).
  4. I only ‘jump on calls’ if we’ve already agreed to work together and an invoice payment has already been cleared.
  5. I charge up front and in full, unless it’s a mother of a project that needs breaking down into smaller pieces.
  6. If your method of payment incurs fees on your side, then you are responsible for covering them.
  7. Proof of set-up is not proof of payment.
  8. If an invoice goes unpaid, I’ll assume you no longer need me. I won’t chase you, and the whole agreement will be void.
  9. See number one again 🙂

Copywriting & Editing

  1. Once I submit any drafts to you, you have 7 days to come back to me with any notes, edits, thoughts, feedback, questions… if I don’t hear anything back from you within that time, I will assume that the draft was perfect as it was, and I’ll consider that element of our work as signed off.
  2. You have two rounds of amendments available to you per piece of work I draft and refine, so please make time to consider any and all proposed changes prior to sending your thoughts back to me in one go.
  3. Nobody enjoys Content by Committee, so if someone was not involved and/or named in the briefing stage, I’m not responsible for pleasing them in the editing stage.
  4. If you change your mind about the direction of your project, the focus of your project, or the content of your project, this is subject to a new brief and a new invoice.
  5. I will only ever proceed to a new element of your project once I know you’re delighted with the previous element I’ve worked on for you.
  6. Once an element or project is signed off, any changes you may want at a later date will be classed as a new project with a new invoice.

Sorted in 60®

  1. Our session is completely guided by what you want or need from it, so please be ready with any thoughts, ideas, drafts or questions you may wish to open our session with.
  2. If you provide the starting point, I will support you with a wealth of different directions from there, and it’s my aim for you to get more than you bargained for – in a good way!
  3. You can feel free to send me any resources prior to our session, but I will use these to briefly familiarise myself, rather than plan anything specific or do any research.
  4. I will send you a recording of our Sorted in 60 (audio and video) within 24 hours of the session taking place, which can be used for any further clarification following our session together.

Creative Copy with Jo (short course)

  1. Nobody wants to present to a completely blank screen, so although all sessions will be recorded for your reference and convenience, please make every effort to turn up to each of the 4 sessions – and keep your camera on throughout (if you’re able and comfortable to do so). This gives so much more of a group feel and dynamic to the course – and makes it easier for me to check in with everybody as we go along.
  2. Tickets for the course are non-refundable – but sh*it happens, and so if you find that for any reason you are no longer able to attend the sessions, you may be able to defer your place to a later run of the course. If that’s not possible, you can transfer your place to another person, or as an alternative, you can ‘bank’ the money towards another project with me – there are lots of options available, and at many different price points.

Speaking gigs/Masterclasses

  1. If you’re hiring me to speak at your event, I will need to know in writing what your topic is, who your audience is, what the expectations are, what the restrictions are, and what your budget is. Sound fair?

You can’t say that this document isn’t clear or lacks impact, so just imagine what this freelancer could do for the messages YOU want to put out into the world.
