When mobile phones were first introduced, the capacity for the content of a text message was minimal at best, so adopting text speak as a form of communication evolved as socially acceptable. However, today, phones are even smarter than their users, and technology predicts our input before we even touch the screen, so it seems that the propensity to omit vowels, whole words or even structure in place of consonant-number collocations in texts should be obsolete. Instead, this bingo lingo flourishes, and I now find it in emails, essays and Heaven forbid, Christmas cards! This is beyond laziness; it’s regressive.
