Blog

My blog is my branding

I don’t know if you’re an occasional visitor to my blog or an avid reader of the stuff I churn out on here.

Similarly, I have no idea if this is your first time here or if you always find yourself back on my blog through no direct intention (or desire) of your own.

Whatever your position, if you’re interested – and still reading – then I thought I may as well explain what my blog – as a standard feature of http://www.agoodwriteup.com – is all about.

In short, my blog is my branding.

Although I love to learn stuff myself, my blog isn’t academic in any way. I don’t really write on it to signpost you to official reports, comment on published articles, or cite anything of ground-breaking significance.

Instead, my blog isn’t so much a place for me to market myself as an authority in copywriting, editing or training, but rather a place for me to market myself full stop. Why? Because when you’re a copywriter, blogging is the perfect way to build and showcase your own branding.

What’s been consistent so far in everything I’ve written on my blog, is the fact that I post regular content on at least a weekly basis, because this is exactly what I tell my clients to do.

What’s also consistent, is the fact that anything I post will be new. It may not always be a 100% original idea (is there even such thing as one of those anymore?) but it will always be a fresh take, a personal angle, or an example of my own individual experience or thought process…

It’s a potentially terrifying place.

As well as using my blog to pass comment on things in life or business that relate to language, branding or things like freelancing, I also use my blog to feature any projects I’ve been working on or any ventures I’ve become involved in. Please don’t mistake this to mean that I write some kind of ‘lifestyle blog’. No, this is not a place for me to empty my head, a place to appeal to my own vanity, or a place for me to write for the sake of writing. If I post about something I’m involved with, it’s because I think it’s a good piece to showcase who I am, what I value, and how I work. I think this is really important in building relationships with anyone out there who may want to work with me at some point in the future.

As a freelancer, I’m responsible for my own marketing, my own PR, and my own sales. Yes, it can be tough to stay on top of all this when my priority is writing for the benefit of my clients’ marketing, PR and sales, but if as a professional copywriter I can’t find a way to promote myself through the written word, then perhaps I should re-think my entire business.

As a place to show the real (yet professional) me, every word I write in my blogs forms part of a portfolio of my natural writing style, so that people can see for themselves what I might be able to offer them through how I use words and stuff.

I can see that my own personal writing style may actually put a few people off ever working with me, too, but at least I’ve not wasted any of their time in having to do the obligatory ‘getting to know you over an overpriced coffee‘ thing, where it’s a race for us to figure out which one of us can’t stand the other person more.

For the last god knows how may years, agoodwriteup has helped so many clients to boost their professional or personal branding. My blogs are simply my way of building my own.

Enjoy.
