It’s a known fact to those who follow my blogs that I’ve taken a little time back recently to focus on taking care of my newborn daughter, Lily.  Many clients and friends have therefore asked me if I’ll be combining work with my home life experience and writing a ‘mummy blog’ or whatever you want to call them.  The answer is no.

Mummy blogs, or ‘mom blogs’ as they’re known by our American cousins, are a fantastic genre, and one that has even resulted in successfully transitioning from social media posts to published books.  I may one day buy one of those books myself, and I’m even attending ‘An Audience With…’ a well-known mummy blogger later next week at our local library.  Much as I enjoy it, however, it’s a genre that I believe is running the risk of becoming saturated, and I feel that newbies would now struggle to make an impact stronger than their counterparts who have already amassed a significant following for their trials, tribulations and tales of tantrums.

I feel that despite my recent entry into motherhood, and a labour that was filled with more than one amusing anecdote to reflect upon, I doubt I’d be telling anyone anything new in writing a mummy blog.  I would hope that it would indeed be amusing, as the most popular mummy blogs tend to be, but I always think that in producing any piece of writing, your content should be 100% original and should offer a fresh or new angle on even the most monotonous or overly-referenced topics.  Right now, however, all I can offer are the following factoids about being a new parent and a writer.

1. It hurts to type one-handed.
2. I read all of my writing back to myself in a sing-song voice.
3. Babies are the best critics for your work, because they just stare at you blankly and say nothing when you read your piece of copy to them.  There’s something about that response that makes you delete everything you’ve just written and start again until it’s better…

So, this is pretty much all I can say at this point.  I’m learning how to be the mother to a small child, I’m learning how to balance parenthood with running my own business, and I’m learning that I just don’t think mummy blogging will be the route I take in my writing right now, because in honesty, motherhood is work enough in itself, so on this occasion I’m more than happy to sit back and be the reader rather than the writer.
